We decided (for a number of reasons) that she should change her family name to mine. The procedure to do this in Japan is a bit different to Australia.<br \/>\nBasically you&#8217;ll need four documents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Juminhyou (\u4f4f\u6c11\u7968) or Resident registration<\/li>\n<li>Kosekitohon (\u6238\u7c4d\u8b04\u672c) or Family registration<\/li>\n<li>Gaikokujin torokuzumi shoumeisho (\u5916\u56fd\u4eba\u767b\u9332\u6e08\u8a3c\u660e\u66f8) or Foreign Registration Form (for non-Japanese spouses)<\/li>\n<li>Uji no henko kyoka moushitatesho (\u6c0f\u306e\u5909\u66f4\u8a31\u53ef\u7533\u7acb\u66f8) or Statutory Deceleration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Get\/fill these forms out and send them (back) to your local family court (\u5bb6\u5ead\u88c1\u5224\u6240) along with ~1400 yen postage\/application stamp\/shunyuinshi (\u53ce\u5165\u5370\u7d19) &#8212; Amount subject to change.<br \/>\nThe family court will then check the submitted documents and if all is order they will send back a &#8220;confirmation&#8221; type form, this is to check that you still want to go ahead the name change. When you receive this, fill it out and attach 150yen in shunyuinshi (\u53ce\u5165\u5370\u7d19) &#8220;application stamps&#8221; (which are just normal stamps you can obtain from the post office) and post it back.<br \/>\nOnce the family court gets back your confirmation and approves the name change they will issue a Kakuteishoumeisho (\u78ba\u5b9a\u8a3c\u660e\u66f8) and Shinpanshotouhon (\u5be9\u5224\u66f8\u8b04\u672c) which you then take to city hall to finalise the name change.<br \/>\nOf course those people who apply for a family name change within six months of marriage don&#8217;t have to do it this way.
